I used to follow the comic strip "Dilbert" when the newspapers were newspapers only.
This Dilbert clipping of mine is from 2004 when I was in the midst of working with Dominic Gates of The Seattle Times in hopes of getting my unfortunately true story of Boeing/FAA management corruption on the front page of the Times so that it would hopefully go national to force Politicians and the FBI to end it. I saved very few Dilbert comics. The ones I did save always were the ones skewering the management fraud and corruption I witnessed as a Boeing employee. Here's a very applicable one I recently un-archived for this post:
Of course, this comic mainly concerns the extremely poor morale among most of the many Boeing employees I knew (that couldn't suck the chrome off of a car bumper because they were always fellating Boeing management so much) that I have written of here many times previously.
Truly, Boeing management doesn't give a damn about the morale of union represented Boeing employees like I was. We were their "most valuable resource," which wasn't their description of our sentimental value to them personally, or to the company. That was just their "inside management joke" way of deceiving workers while staying truthful at the same time.
What they truly meant by that one time statement was pointing out the fact that employee pay and benefits, especially those of relatively much better compensated union represented employees, was their most valuable (to the bottom line) resource area to cut at every possible opportunity.
And Boeing management has always done so, while vastly overcompensating the always corrupt top management of the company. They offer takeaway contracts every contract negotiation year even in very good times for the company. Most recently they took away the very, very hard won pensions that union employees at Boeing have had for decades by their usual threatening to move future production if the union didn't accept that massive takeaway.
How great for Boeing worker morale--not.
Yet there is a bright spot, assuming you are working in Boeing's non-union "union avoidance factory" in South Carolina that almost builds sections of every 787, and almost builds and delivers some almost complete 787s to Boeing's customers. I hear that Boeing management treats those workers as almost human, as long as they don't dare unionize so Boeing has to compensate them anywhere near what their work is worth. Of course, once the latest very uncommon unionization effort fails at the plant, they are just fodder for the unemployment line, just like all of Boeing's most valuable (costly) union "resources."
And to be a worker praised as noted in the comic by corrupt Boeing management, you usually have to cut corners and/or rollerstamp, if you are an inspector. If you are ethical, as I was, Boeing management praise wasn't what you wanted, as no ethical person wants praise from the most unethical large company management in America.
Threats came around for all unionized Boeing workers every contract negotiation year, and for employees that refused to engage in Boeing management directed fraud like I did, all of the time.
"Maybe they can be motivated by the importance of their work," as the comic says? LOL. Should be the case, but it isn't at Boeing, when the whole production process is based on wholesale QA fraud. As a relatively recent world wide excellent news story pointed out, 2 out of 3 Boeing workers who build and pretend inspect Boeing airplanes won't let themselves or their families fly on them because of all of the fraud they have seen on the production line that negates much of the quality and safety of Boeing planes Boeing almost builds.
Actually, fatally corrupt (for other people) Boeing management has just very recently essentially and finally finished implementing their decades long plan to build Boeing airplanes just like the worst quality terrestrial bound cars are built--as fast as possible, with no inspection. What could go wrong? Everything, at least for the passengers and crews on Boeing planes, and those unfortunate to be on the ground in the crash zone. At least 750 deaths so far because of this Boeing/FAA management fraud prove this point.
But what is most on point in this comic is not the Boeing management driven poor morale among Boeing workers, or the threats and lack of praise from Boeing management for Boeing workers.
The sixth comic frame is most applicable to the corruption of Boeing management. "Their work is making second-rate products to sell to idiots so our executives can afford trophy wives." Brilliant work by Adams in spite of the Deplorable misogynistic source. So very descriptive of Boeing's entire business plan in just a few words!
Boeing does make second-rate products, as most charitably judged, in its market. Airbus actually inspects their airplanes fully and delivers them in vastly better quality and conformity than Boeing does theirs. And because they are actually fully inspected before delivery as required, they are actually delivered complete, unlike "bucket of (loose, missing, wrong, and over and under torqued) bolts" Boeing planes.
But now with entry of Bambardier's C Series commercial airplanes, Embraer's E-Jet E2 commercial airplanes, China's COMAC C919 commercial airplane, and Russia's Irkut MC-21 commercial airplanes, it can be legitimately argued that Boeing airplanes are not second-rate, but are now sixth-rate largely uninspected "buckets of bolts," assuming the likely case that Airbus and the other four commercial airplane companies noted have non-automotive based and non-fraud based QA systems.
And the "sell to idiots" in the noted comic frame applies to Boeing as well. They sell knowingly sixth-rate defect riddled planes to clueless airline victims. However, not all airlines are clueless about this Boeing fraud. After all, this website is here for all of them to view, and almost all Boeing customers know some of just how defect riddled as delivered their Boeing planes are. Japan Airlines (JAL) certainly knows, but yet is still inexplicably a Boeing customer last time I checked.
But many of Japan's industries, I believe, are still largely male and corruption rife. That makes them the perfect Boeing customer, as Boeing management is sadly the same testosterone driven and corruption based company.
Japan has a traditional practice (known as amakudari) of assigning retired government officials to top positions within Japanese companies. Boeing has the same system with which it corrupts and bilks our government via the hiring of key former FAA and DOD just retired employees. Boeing even installs its executives into key government posts Boeing has interests in corrupting, such as the recent installation of former Boeing VP Patrick Shanahan as Deputy Secretary of Defense, where he can covertly advocate for Boeing getting all DOD contracts it wants in the first two years in the key DOD management position, but then can openly advocate for Boeing getting all DOD contracts Boeing wants the rest of the time he is a Boeing mole in the highest levels of the DOD when his two year, likely worthless as practiced, recusal from handling Boeing DOD contracts expires.
But corruption doesn't explain why all Boeing airlines buy Boeing airplanes they know through past experience are defect riddled as delivered. Pure greed, I believe, is the most prevalent reason airlines knowingly buy ever more defect riddled Boeing planes, at least among the greedy but not clueless airlines.
Simply, low fare airlines go with Boeing planes only because they are cheaper than Airbus planes, not because of the sixth-rate last place quality or safety of Boeing planes. These all Boeing low fare airlines aren't stupid. They are just greedy number crunchers who have determined that lower cost almost built Boeing planes are better for their chosen business plan of a low quality, low cost airline. They are the Motel 6's of the airline industry, whereas more ethical and less greedy airlines choose higher priced and actually inspected Airbus planes for their fleets.
And the last part of this key Boeing mismanagement applicable Dilbert comic key frame, "so our executives can afford trophy wives," is actually the stripped down version of the only vision Boeing executives run the company per--maximizing the value of their Boeing stock options so they can afford their needy trophy wives, high end mistresses and/or prostitutes, cocaine, car collections, high end real estate investments, wine cellars, yachts, their spoiled worthless children's tuition at an Ivy League school and the bribe to get them in, etc., etc.
As for the specific trophy wives of Boeing Executives, I will leave that for another day's post, perhaps. But everyone knows of former Harry Stonecipher's trophy wife that he struck up an affair with as Boeing CEO. Young enough to be his daughter (a prerequisite for a trophy wife), their relationship ended Harry's 50 year marriage with his first wife when the affair was made public when Boeing had no choice but to fire him for it when Boeing received an anonymous tip that erotic Boeing emails were being sent between Harry and the Boeing subordinate he was having an affair with.
If Boeing knew who the source of the email tip was and could terminate their ability to leak them to the press, Stonecipher would still be Boeing CEO today if he chose not to eventually retire and the Boeing Board waived the age limit for the CEO position for him. Boeing executive management seems to always choose to do the corrupt thing first in order to protect themselves. Only when doing that is not possible will they regretfully do the right thing.
